Since My House was founded in 1992 by Sister Jane Remson and Mrs. Mildred Krieger, it has provided educational support to hundreds of children, youth and their families. My House began as a residence for homeless children and their mothers. The Learning Center was established for homeless mothers in order to work on GED preparation and to help their children obtain assistance with schoolwork. The Learning Center soon expanded to an After-School Program providing homework assistance and educationally enriching activities to 1st through 7th grade students from neighborhood schools. A summer program began in 1995. When My House closed its residential program in 1997, it seized the opportunity to expand its educational services. The Safe & Smart After-School & Summer Camp programs were born, serving approximately 60 kindergarten through 8th grade students during the school year and 48 students during the summer. In 2002, My House received the prestigious 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant to expand our programs to include many morel students. Due to severe flooding of our city (including our building), caused by hurricane Katrina in August 2005, we temporarily had to close our doors. My House reopened in January 2007 in a temporary location. We currently offer Safe & Smart After-School & Summer Camp programs at First Evangelist Baptist Church located at 1801 Willow Street. We look forward to returning to our newly renovated 2010 Peniston Street location in 2008. In addition, My House looks forward to opening a new state-of-the art childcare and preschool program for children ages 6 weeks through 3 years of age.
